People search for a physio by their symptoms: what a physiotherapy website needs

“Physiotherapist lower back pain Valencia”, “dry needling Palma”: that is how patients search. What a physiotherapy website needs to rank and get bookings.

Written by Marco Ruiz on , revised

Many patients looking for a physiotherapist start on Google, and the physio who appears first on the map tends to get the call. Word of mouth helps, but it rarely reaches someone with acute back pain today.

If you depend only on word of mouth to fill your diary, your growth has a low ceiling. A website that ranks gives you a steady flow of new patients that doesn't depend on current patients recommending you.

Why word of mouth isn't enough, even when it works

Word of mouth is valuable. It also has limits:

  • It's slow. A patient may take weeks or months to recommend you at the right moment.
  • It doesn't scale. It depends on how many patients you have and whether they talk to the right people.
  • It doesn't work for urgent cases. Someone with acute back pain searches "urgent physiotherapist near me" on Google today.
  • You don't control the message. On your website you decide what patients see: your techniques, training and way of working.

Your website and word of mouth work together: a patient who is recommended to you will usually look you up on Google before calling, to see whether they can trust you.

What a physiotherapist's website needs

A clear professional profile. Training, specialities and techniques: manipulation, dry needling, clinical Pilates, manual therapy. Patients with chronic conditions look for specific specialists.

The conditions you treat. "Lower back pain", "neck pain", "shoulder injury", "post-surgery rehab", "sports injuries". Those are your future patients' searches. If they're not on your website, you won't appear when they search.

Clear prices. For example: "First consultation €X. Session €X. 10-session pack €X." Many patients rule out a practice if they can't find even a guide price.

Online booking or a visible WhatsApp button. Many patients prefer to book online or send a message. If you don't offer that, some will go to a practice that does.

Visible Google reviews. Other patients' reviews are one of the first things a new patient looks at. Show them on your website and ask for them after each discharge.

Useful content. An article on "what to do when your back hurts" or "when to see a physio and when a doctor" shows what you know and brings visits from Google over time.

A real case from the sector: Revitalis Fisioterapia, a physiotherapy clinic in Vélez-Málaga, is one of my clients. Its website, with an appointment system, is launching now. If you want to see how online appointments work, I've built a demo for a fictional wellness centre, Centro Vitalia. It's an example, not a real client. It includes physiotherapy, psychology and nutrition services, online booking and a panel to manage the diary: see the demo.

Online appointments with WhatsApp reminders, connected to your website and Google: from €700 one-off, or the All-in-one Pack from €99/month.

Local SEO for physiotherapists

Rank for pain and conditions as well as "physiotherapist". "Physiotherapist lower back pain Valencia", "physio shoulder Marbella", "dry needling Palma". Patients search by their problem. Your website has to use the words of their symptoms.

One page per speciality. If you treat sports injuries, a page on "sports physiotherapy in [town]"; if you teach clinical Pilates, another one, so each page can appear when someone searches for that speciality.

Keep your Google profile active. Upload photos of the practice, reply to every review, post monthly updates. If you don't have time, monthly management of your profile and reviews is included in the Website + Google Pack (from €59/month).

Answer your patients' real questions. "How many sessions do I need for neck pain?", "Does dry needling hurt?", "When can I go back to sport after a sprain?" If the answer is on your site, people who had never heard of you find you.

Common mistakes on physiotherapist websites

Mistake 1: too generic. "Quality physiotherapy for the whole family" ranks for nothing. Be specific: what you treat, how, with which techniques and where.

Mistake 2: no prices. Many patients leave if they can't find prices. A guide range is enough.

Mistake 3: not built for mobile. Many physio searches happen on a phone, often while the person is in pain. If your site doesn't load well on mobile, you lose that call.

Mistake 4: no WhatsApp button. Many patients prefer writing to calling.

Mistake 5: no clear specialities. "We do everything" tells nothing to someone looking for help with a specific problem. If you specialise in sports injuries or pelvic floor, say so on the home page.

What a well-built website gives you

  • Your own channel for new patients, without depending only on word of mouth or social media.
  • Better-informed patients: they arrive having read your prices, training and approach.
  • A tidier diary: with online appointments (the website with bookings or appointments, or the All-in-one Pack), patients book without interrupting your sessions.
  • Credibility: in a profession built on trust, a clear website counts.

Online appointments for your practice
